چکیده

Conjunctive queries are basic and heavily studied database queries; in relational algebra, they are the select-project-join queries. In this article, we study the fundamental problem of counting, given a conjunctive query and a relational database, the number of answers to the query on the database. In particular, we study the complexity of this problem relative to sets of conjunctive queries. We present a trichotomy theorem, which shows essentially that this problem on a set of conjunctive queries is either tractable, equivalent to the parameterized CLIQUE problem, or as hard as the parameterized counting CLIQUE problem; the criteria describing which of these situations occurs is simply stated, in terms of graph-theoretic conditions. 1998 ACM Subject Classification H.2.3 [Database Management]: Languages – Query languages, F.1.3 [Computation by Abstract Devices]: Complexity measures and classes, G.2.2 [Discrete Mathematics]: Graph Theory – Hypergraphs

An Algebraic Approach to the Complexity of Generalized Conjunctive Queries

Kolaitis and Vardi pointed out that constraint satisfaction and conjunctive query containment are essentially the same problem. We study the Boolean conjunctive queries under a more detailed scope, where we investigate their counting problem by means of the algebraic approach through Galois theory, taking advantage of Post’s lattice. We prove a trichotomy theorem for the generalized conjunctive...

Tractable Counting of the Answers to Conjunctive Queries

Conjunctive queries (CQs) are one of the most fundamental forms of database queries. In general, the evaluation of CQs is NPcomplete. Consequently, there has been an intensive search for tractable fragments. In this paper, we want to initiate a systematic search for tractable fragments of the counting problem of CQs, i.e., the problem of counting the answers to a CQ. We prove several new tracta...

Answering Counting Aggregate Queries over Ontologies of the DL-Lite Family

One of the main applications of description logics is the ontology-based data access model, which requires algorithms for query answering over ontologies. In fact, some description logics, like those in the DL-Lite family, are designed so that simple queries, such as conjunctive queries, are efficiently computable. In this paper we study counting aggregate queries over ontologies, i.e. queries ...

Consistent Answers of Conjunctive Queries on Graphs

During the past decade, there has been an extensive investigation of the computational complexity of the consistent answers of Boolean conjunctive queries under primary key constraints. Much of this investigation has focused on self-join-free Boolean conjunctive queries. In this paper, we study the consistent answers of Boolean conjunctive queries involving a single binary relation, i.e., we co...

Conjunctive Query Containment over Trees

The complexity of containment and satisfiability of conjunctive queries over finite, unranked, labeled trees is studied with respect to the axes Child , NextSibling , their transitive and reflexive closures, and Following . For the containment problem a trichotomy is presented, classifying the problems as in PTIME, coNP-complete, or Π 2 -complete. For the satisfiability problem most problems ar...
